Time for a new job?

{ Time for a new job? }

At this time of year as well as the never ending barbecues, Christmas parties and holiday time, a lot of people will spend some time reflecting on the year that has been and make those all important New Year resolutions - a common New Year resolution being to learn something new, find a new job or… even change your career completely. It’s estimated that people now have three different careers during their working life. If you are thinking of having a complete change here are a few tips I read recently on news.com.au:

Here’s the essential steps you need to take to make your dream a success.

1. CONSIDER YOUR MOTIVATION
Are you sick of your company and your colleagues or boss or are you ready for a complete change of profession? Think carefully about why you want a change. It may be simpler just to change companies.

2. TALK TO FRIENDS AND FAMILY
A change in career is a big life choice that doesn’t have to be tackled alone. Talk to friends and family about your ideas and get their advice. They may have some insight.

3. FOLLOW YOUR INTERESTS
If after analysing your situation and seeking advice you still have the drive to change careers, look at your personal interests and passions. What are you good at in your current job, what do you like outside of work?

4. IDENTIFY YOUR SKILLS
Make a list of everything you do in your current role, plus the skills you have acquired in other jobs. Then think about your personal skills. For example are you good with people, or with children? Are these relevant to a future career?

5. RESEARCH QUALIFICATIONS
Ascertain the qualifications or professional memberships required for your chosen field. It is not always necessary to start a course or degree from scratch. On the job training and experience is recognised.

6. SPEAK TO PEOPLE IN THE INDUSTRY
Advice from experts in the industry is invaluable. They can give you anecdotal advice on what it is like to work there, contacts and suggestions of who might be hiring now. They can also give insight into your new job. It never hurts to stay in contact with such people to be aware of future opportunities.

7. WORK EXPERIENCE
In order to get noticed by a prospective employer, some work experience shows that you are motivated to make the change happen. It will also give them some confidence about your ability to do that particular job.
