Yesterday my colleague Brad Ireland posted his blog announcing the Queensland Governments high court challenge of the mining tax. Today I post announcing another major mine approval! Described in the press as a “struggling junior miner”, Cockatoo Coal will be “cock’a'hoop” upon announcing the approval for its $1.2bn development of its mine near Taroom near the western Darling Downs in Queensland.

Cockatoo Coal will be working hard to prepare their environmental impact statement for the proposed 8 million tonnes per year mine sitting close to Xstrata’s massive Wandoan project. It seems that Queenslands mining industry is heading for an exciting albeit rollercoaster year as the majors jostle for supremacy whilst the juniors quietly secure significant wins of their own.
