Our client is a respected not-for-profit organisation operating across multiple Australian jurisdictions. Delivering a range of community and wellbeing services, the organisation plays an important role in supporting individuals and families through complex life challenges.

With a strong reputation in its sector and an ambitious agenda for continued growth and organisational maturity, the business is investing in its legal, governance and compliance capability to support future success.

The Role

Reporting directly to the CEO, this newly created role will establish the organisation’s first dedicated in-house legal function while leading the company secretariat and governance function.

You will act as a trusted adviser to the CEO, Board and Executive, providing practical and commercially focused legal advice across a broad range of matters.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Acting as Company Secretary and supporting the Board and Board Committees;

  • Providing strategic and pragmatic legal advice across commercial, governance and operational matters;

  • Reviewing, drafting and negotiating commercial contracts, funding agreements and property arrangements;

  • Advising on governance obligations, regulatory compliance and organisational risk;

  • Managing external legal providers and legal spend;

  • Supporting governance framework uplift and organisational transformation initiatives;

  • Advising on property, leasing and commercial matters across a substantial national footprint; and

  • Partnering with executive leaders on complex and sensitive business issues.

This role will also play an important part in supporting the organisation's continued growth and future strategic initiatives.

About You

You are an experienced legal professional who combines strong technical capability with commercial judgement and excellent stakeholder management skills.

You will bring:

  • Admission as a legal practitioner in Australia;

  • Experience gained within a commercial, corporate or in-house legal environment;

  • Exposure to Board support and/or company secretariat responsibilities;

  • Strong commercial contracts and general commercial advisory experience;

  • The ability to provide practical, solutions-focused advice in complex environments;

  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills; and

  • The confidence to operate autonomously while working collaboratively with senior stakeholders.

Experience within healthcare, community services, government, regulated industries or the not-for-profit sector will be highly regarded but is not essential.
