  • Location: Melbourne, VIC (Hybrid); and

  • Reporting to: Head of Investments.

About the Organisation:

Our client is a leading, regulated financial solutions provider and institutional wealth manager with over $6 billion in assets under management. They pride themselves on pioneering innovative, tax-effective investment products tailored to meet a wide range of investor needs and life stages.

The Opportunity:

As the Head of Credit & Fixed Interest Investments, you will take ultimate asset ownership of the defensive and fixed-income book. This is a high-impact technical and strategic leadership role tailored for an expert in structural finance, asset-liability matching (ALM), and regulated portfolio management.

You will guide everything from credit strategy and portfolio design to portfolio execution, statutory capital adequacy compliance, and external manager selection.

Key Responsibilities:

Fixed Interest Strategy & Portfolio Construction:

  • Macro & Credit Analysis: Examine global macroeconomic indicators, inflation trends, central bank policies, and financial statements to determine optimal investment strategies;

  • Granular Underwriting: Deeply apply bond math (duration, convexity, yield curves, and spread analysis) alongside rating agency frameworks to rigorously assess issuer creditworthiness; and

  • Portfolio design: Drive the continual improvement of the mandate framework, manage risk-adjusted returns, ensure liability matching, and oversee quantitative applications across risk, factors, and attribution.

Mandate Design, Securitisation & Partner Selection:

  • Structural Oversight: Apply a strong practical understanding of credit, securitisation, and short-duration fixed-interest markets to structure and implement robust investment mandates;

  • Pool & Market Evaluation: Analyse legal documentation, cash-flow waterfalls, and credit enhancements to identify attractive loan pools (including RMBS, CMBS, and ABS), while strictly identifying sectors to avoid; and

  • GP Due Diligence: Network across the industry to identify, assess, and conduct deep operational and investment due diligence on specialist General Partners (GPs) and alternative investment partners.

Regulatory Compliance & Risk Frameworks:

  • Asset-Liability Management (ALM): Align the fixed-income book with the strict balance sheet constraints of a regulated insurance entity, actively participate in managing interest rate risk and liquidity risk; and

  • Mandate Auditing: Run daily, monthly, and quarterly compliance auditing on the investment strategies, swiftly investigating and reporting any mandate or capital restrictions breaches directly to the Head of Investments.

Experience & Skills Required:

  • Background: 5–10 years of experience within institutional investment management, with highly desirable exposure to APRA regulated balance sheets, defined benefit funds, or liability-matching strategies;

  • Education: A tertiary qualification in Finance, Economics, Actuarial Science, or a related Quantitative discipline. A CFA Charter, Master’s degree, or Actuarial training is viewed very favourably;

  • Tech Stack: Advanced Excel skills and strong proficiency in Bloomberg and enterprise risk systems (e.g., Aladdin, Charles River). Modern coding/programming experience is highly regarded; and

  • Attributes: A highly motivated, hardworking professional who looks at complex problems through a different lens to drive innovation. Exceptional written and verbal communication skills are required for coordinating with executive boards and committees.

What’s on Offer:

  • A senior investment leadership role with genuine portfolio ownership;

  • A collaborative corporate environment that values proactive thinking and creative financial problem-solving; and

  • Competitive salary package + performance-based incentives.
