u&u Recruitment are delighted to be exclusively partnering with a financial services organisation if growth mode. Having carved out a reputation for one of the most active M&A organisations in Australia, this organisation have historically held wide job remits but with some more growth they have decided to create new roles to ensure their growth can continue. The newly created Risk Manager role is a clear Line 1 role, established with a clear mandate to strengthen and embed the organisation's first-line risk capability.
Historically, a significant amount of risk-related activity has sat within the Finance function. This role has been created to provide dedicated ownership, expertise and structure around the organisation's first-line risk responsibilities, allowing Finance to focus on its core remit while ensuring risk is properly embedded across the business.
This isn't a role focused purely on frameworks, policies and risk registers. You'll be hands-on, commercially minded and comfortable getting into the detail, working closely with Finance and operational stakeholders to identify risks, improve controls and drive practical outcomes.
The role has been deliberately structured as a fixed-term appointment for a minimum of 12m around a defined set of milestones and deliverables.
You'll have the opportunity to come into the business, understand the existing risk environment, establish priorities and deliver tangible improvements across a number of key risk initiatives. The expectation is that you'll be able to demonstrate progress through clearly defined milestones rather than simply maintain the status quo.
Your initial focus will include:
Establishing and embedding a robust first-line risk management framework;
Reviewing and enhancing the existing risk and control environment;
Working with Finance and business leaders to identify, assess and mitigate key risks;
Strengthening risk registers, control documentation and risk reporting;
Reviewing the effectiveness of existing controls and identifying practical improvements;
Supporting risk and control self-assessments, including ownership and accountability;
Developing and tracking risk treatment plans and remediation actions;
Improving the way operational and financial risks are identified and escalated;
Partnering with the second line / Risk & Compliance function where appropriate;
Helping transition risk ownership from Finance into the appropriate business functions; and
Providing clear, commercially relevant reporting to senior stakeholders.
We're looking for someone who is comfortable rolling up their sleeves and doing the work.
You'll likely have experience in a first-line risk, operational risk, controls, governance, internal audit or broader risk management environment, but just as importantly, you'll understand how risk operates within a commercial business.
You'll be someone who:
Can operate comfortably at both strategic and detailed levels;
Is highly hands-on and enjoys building rather than simply advising;
Can translate risk and control concepts into practical business solutions;
Has strong stakeholder management skills and can influence without relying on authority;
Is comfortable partnering closely with Finance, Operations and senior leadership;
Can challenge constructively while maintaining strong commercial relationships;
Is confident working through ambiguity and establishing structure where it doesn't currently exist;
Can take ownership of deliverables and hit clearly defined milestones; and
Has excellent written and verbal communication skills.
This is an opportunity to step into a role with genuine ownership and visibility, rather than inheriting a highly established risk function.
You'll have a defined mandate, access to senior stakeholders and the opportunity to make a tangible difference to how risk is managed across the organisation. For someone who enjoys being close to the business and seeing their work translate into practical improvements, it's a role where you'll be able to point to clear outcomes at the end of the assignment.
