u&u Recruitment Partners are proud to be partnering with a successful and entrepreneurial Australia property investment and development business in their search for an inaugural Senior Legal Counsel.

This is a genuinely unique opportunity to become the first dedicated in-house lawyer within a growing, high-performing business with more than $2b in transaction value and $1.1b+ in assets under management.

You will take ownership of the legal function and become a trusted adviser to the executive team and deal-facing professionals across the business.

The Opportunity:

Our client is looking for a legal quarterback, someone who can sit alongside the transactions, development, investment management and finance teams, understand what the business is trying to achieve, identify legal and commercial risks early and find practical ways to get deals done.

You will have significant autonomy and responsibility from day one, including:

  • Advising on property acquisitions, disposals and complex transactions;

  • Supporting property development projects, including development, construction, consultancy and project agreements;

  • Advising on leasing, asset management and property-related matters;

  • Supporting investment management, fund establishment and investor documentation;

  • Working alongside finance teams on property and investment financing;

  • Advising on broader corporate and commercial matters, governance and risk;

  • Managing disputes and claims as they arise;

  • Developing and implementing the business's legal templates, processes and playbooks;

  • Taking ownership of relationships with external legal advisers and ensuring they deliver commercially focused advice; and

  • Managing and optimising external legal spend.

You will determine when specialist external advice is required, select the right advisers, brief them effectively and ensure legal matters are progressed efficiently and commercially.

As the business continues to grow, the successful candidate is expected to evolve into the organisation's General Counsel, with the opportunity to build and lead a legal function.

About you:

You will have 6–10+ years' post-admission experience and will ideally bring experience across one or more of:

  • Property or real estate transactions;

  • M&A and corporate transactions;

  • Banking and finance;

  • Property development and investment; and

  • Investment management.

Property investment experience is highly advantageous, although candidates with a strong M&A or transactional background will also be considered.

You will be comfortable operating with autonomy, negotiating directly with sophisticated counterparties and advisers, and providing clear advice to senior executives.
