Benefits

  • Broad senior role spanning commercial contracts, regulatory compliance, privacy and consumer law;

  • Work directly with senior stakeholders across legal, procurement, risk and compliance;

  • Advise on technology procurement, strategic projects and business-critical initiatives;

  • Autonomous role with scope to improve legal processes and support junior team members; and

  • Contract opportunity with an established Australian consumer services business.

Our client

Our client is an established Australian consumer services business operating in a complex and highly regulated environment. Its legal team works closely with stakeholders across the organisation to support sustainable growth, manage regulatory risk and deliver practical solutions aligned with commercial objectives.

The role

Reporting to the General Counsel, you will act as a senior and trusted adviser across the business. This is a broad in-house role combining commercial contracting with regulatory, privacy, consumer protection and corporate advisory work.
You will work autonomously while partnering closely with legal, procurement, risk and compliance colleagues, as well as senior business stakeholders. The role will suit a commercially minded lawyer who can translate complex legal and regulatory issues into clear, practical advice.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Advising on legislative and regulatory obligations affecting the business;

  • Drafting, reviewing and negotiating a broad range of commercial agreements;

  • Providing legal and strategic advice on major expenditure, procurement and projects;

  • Advising on Australian Consumer Law, privacy, data and information security matters;

  • Reviewing marketing collateral and digital content for legal and regulatory compliance;

  • Identifying opportunities to improve legal processes and drive more efficient practices; and

  • Supporting and mentoring other members of the legal team.

About you

You will ideally bring:

  • 8+ years’ post-admission experience gained in a mid or top-tier firm and/or a senior in-house role;

  • Strong general commercial capability, including contract negotiation and regulatory compliance;

  • Detailed knowledge of Australian Consumer Law and the Privacy Act;

  • Experience advising on corporations or financial services regulation;

  • An Australian practising certificate; and

  • Strong judgement, clear communication skills and the ability to work autonomously.

Experience leading technology procurement matters or projects, and exposure to reportable breaches or incident management, will be highly regarded. Knowledge of consumer credit, energy regulation or broader financial services legislation would also be valuable.
