Melbourne | 2IC Senior Legal Counsel role | High-Impact Litigation Role
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Legal Counsel to join a national business in a pivotal in-house disputes role. Reporting to a terrific General Counsel, you will take ownership of a diverse portfolio of litigation and DR matters, with a particular focus on consumer law and product liability disputes. Lean legal team with wide responsibility across the organisation.
The Role:
This is a hands-on position where you will independently manage complex disputes end-to-end, working closely with internal stakeholders and external advisors. Key responsibilities include:
Managing and running litigation across consumer law, product liability, contractual, property, credit risk and employment matters;
Representing the business in tribunals including VCAT/NCAT/QCAT, as well as mediations and conciliations;
Advising on Australian Consumer Law (ACL), including product defects and safety, recalls, manufacturer indemnities and customer claims;
Engaging with regulators and preparing submissions, responses and compliance updates;
Drafting and settling court documents (statements of claims, points of defence, evidence);
Drafting settlement deeds, mediation agreements and dispute related correspondence; and
Developing proactive dispute resolution and risk mitigation strategies, including legal and compliance training of internal stakeholders to minimise claims.
You will also play a broader role within the Legal Department in strengthening legal frameworks, supporting compliance initiatives, contributing to strategic business projects and mentorship of junior legal staff.
About You:
You are an experienced disputes lawyer with:
5+ years’ PQE with a strong background in litigation, disputes and regulatory matters;
Demonstrated expertise in consumer law and product liability;
Experience appearing in VCAT (or similar tribunals), and running mediations and conciliations;
The ability to manage matters autonomously and provide clear, commercially pragmatic advice; and
Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the confidence to influence and challenge where required.
