Your Opportunity
Reporting to the Head of Stakeholder Relations the Manager, Government and Industry Relations is responsible for developing and implementing the enterprise-wide Stakeholder Engagement Strategy to grow trusted relationships, drive reputational goals and lead advocacy and influencing efforts to manage business opportunities and risks for the benefit of our 1.6 million customers and shareholding councils.
This critical leadership role drives proactive, targeted stakeholder engagement and builds trusted, non-partisan relationships across all levels of government, industry, regulators and water providers. Working closely with the Board, CEO and executive team, you will provide strategic advice on political developments, translating insights into action while enabling leaders to engage with impact. You will lead the development and delivery of a multi-year Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, oversee advocacy campaigns and submissions, and foster a collaborative, high-performing team culture focused on continuous improvement and strong relationships.
Your key responsibilities will include, but not be limited to:
Leadership – Lead and deliver the Stakeholder Engagement Strategy, empowering a high-performing team and fostering a positive culture;
Internal Partnerships – Collaborate with internal stakeholders to deliver aligned strategies, programs and advocacy outcomes;
Strategic Planning & Implementation – Develop and execute an enterprise-wide strategy, with clear reporting, visibility and high-quality communications;
Strategic Engagement – Build and manage relationships across government, industry and regulators, communicating complex issues with clarity and influence;
Brand & Reputation – Protect and enhance Urban Utilities’ reputation as a trusted and progressive service provider;
Customer/Community Advocacy – Represent customer and community interests in decision-making and stakeholder engagement; and
Policy & Content Development – Oversee development of policies, procedures and key communication materials.
Please note, this position may also require on-call duties outside of standard working hours due to the critical nature of the role.
About you
If you’re passionate about what you do and are ready to join an organisation that has a genuine impact on the communities we serve, we’d love to hear from you. Ideally you will have:
Relevant bachelor’s degree in public policy, communications, political science, law or similar;
Experience in stakeholder engagement and government relations within critical infrastructure, regulatory environments or a related sector along with a deep understanding of government processes;
Demonstrated analytical and strategic thinking skills that enable the development and execution of a successful strategic stakeholder engagement strategy and advocacy efforts with government and key stakeholders;
Proven ability to navigate complex political and policy environments, demonstrating strong advocacy skills and a track record of establishing non-partisan relationships with government officials and policymakers;
Proven ability to be a trusted adviser and to collaborate effectively within a large organisation, particularly with CEO, Board, executive and senior leaderships teams;
Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills with the ability to understand and articulate positions clearly in written submissions, reports, and presentations;
Knowledge of current and future political priorities and issues, coupled with a proactive and motivated approach to advocate and influence for the benefit of Urban Utilities;
Adaptability to changing environments, including in the political and legislative context; and
Established relationships highly regarded.
